Gilmore Girls is arguably one of the most successful TV series of all time. It is not a coincidence that you see clips of this show pop up on social media every time the clock strikes midnight on October 1st, despite the years that have gone by since the last episode. It has created an unparalleled franchise and an even more remarkable community of devoted fans. Do you ever wonder why that is?
Well, the plot is nice. It has some entertaining twists and turns, but it is certainly not the first story about a gifted teenager who loves books. The small-town atmosphere is unprecedented, but still, it is not Stars Hollow we always remember. It’s the people living in it.
That’s right. The very best element in Gilmore Girls are the characters and the amazing ability of everyone involved - including but not limited to writers and actors - to bring those people to life and leave a permanent mark in the audience’s soul.
In this article, I will delve into the aspects that make characters so special and memorable, giving a specific example for each point I make.

1) Character complexity

It is not at all uncommon to see characters on TV shows that display a series of behaviours that make them turn into complete caricatures of themselves. This series, is not one of them. The characters are just like normal people. They live eccentric, yet realistic lives, facing challenges and celebrating milestones. They don’t have it the easy way, and when they do, they acknowledge their privilege. They show a perfect balance between flaws and strengths. This complexity and multi-dimensional representation of a characters helps viewers feel more connected to them, uncovering their motivations and goals, layer after layer.

Obviously, the two protagonists are an excellent example of well-developed characters, but I would like to shift my focus on one of the most underrated, yet absolutely riveting individuals: Emily Gilmore. Her complexity arises from a myriad of factors. Her strained relationship with her daughter Lorelai adds layers to her character, while her upper-class status and traditional values clash with her daughter’s independent lifestyle, creating ongoing tension. Over the course of the series, Emily undergoes significant personal growth, becoming more empathetic and less codependent, especially after her husband's passing, which also highlights her vulnerability and loneliness. Her unwavering sense of duty to family and social standing both defines and limits her, and despite her sometimes emotionally detached exterior, she has moments of warmth and love, particularly when it comes to her granddaughter Rory. These various facets of her personality contribute to her status as one of the most complex characters in the show.

2) Character evolution

Another paramount aspect that I have remarked while watching the show (or re-watching it for the fifth time due to my addiction to it) is the impeccable execution of character growth. Since we follow how their lives unravel over the years, it is inevitable for them to slowly change, for the better or for the worse. Some characters are more dynamic than others, but none of them can be defined as stagnant. Unlike other shows, where goals are unwavering and personality traits don’t move an inch, the cast of Gilmore Girls evolves in a natural and organic manner that is both realistic and entertaining for the audience, keeping everyone invested in their journeys.

Although his change mostly occurs off-screen, I believe the most outstanding and much needed character-development is the one concerning Jess Mariano. Initially introduced as a rebellious and troubled teenager, Jess's character undergoes a series of important changes throughout the series. His journey from a misunderstood, leather-jacket-wearing, book-loving troublemaker to a more mature, responsible, and thoughtful adult is what makes his transformation stand out. Underneath his tough exterior, Jess's intelligence and love for literature become more apparent as he embraces personal responsibility, works on his relationships, and pursues his dreams. This transformation highlights the show's themes of personal growth and second chances, making Jess one of the most beloved and well-developed characters in Gilmore Girls.

3) Witty dialogue

Who hasn’t wondered how the characters in Gilmore Girls manage to come up with such smart and well-phrased remarks in the span of a split second? Their rapid-fire conversations are perhaps one of the most entertaining and typical components that audience can find while watching the show. It may not be the most realistic attributes of the series since I believe a human could not possibly keep up with the rapid pace set by the characters, but it certainly gives them more charm. They become more interesting, more intriguing, between a witty dialogue and the other, a clever banter and arguments with a splash of humor.

Needless to say, if you have watched even a few minutes of the show, you’ll already know who I am going to talk about here. Lorelai Gilmore's title as the wittiest character on Gilmore Girls is well-earned. Her quick and clever humor, marked by pop culture references and wordplay, consistently injects the show with charm and entertainment. Lorelai's ability to turn any situation into a humorous anecdote, even in the face of life's challenges, is a testament to her wit. Her banter with other characters, particularly her mother Emily and best friend Sookie, adds an extra layer of humor to the series. Lorelai's sarcastic comebacks, combined with her immense allure, make her the character who brings some of the most memorable and hilarious moments to the show. Her wit not only defines her character but also enhances the overall comedic appeal of Gilmore Girls.

4) Strong character relationships

The main element that drags the story forward and drives the narrative are the relationships between characters. The show always emphasises the paramount importance of bonds of every kind, be it mother-daughter, between friends or romantic relationships. It is yet another example of how the series gives depth to characters in a realistic fashion. After all, bonds are what mainly define a person in real life as well, it is totally reasonable to see why the show puts them on such a high level of prominence.

While it would be automatic to mention Lorelai and Rory as the perfect case in point for this passage, I would like to explore some of the least talked about relationships in the show, highlighting their complexities as well. Arguably, the bond formed between Lane and Ms Kim was one of the most under-appreciated of the series and I’ll explain why. It is of paramount importance to the development of the series. Lane, a rebellious and music-loving teenager, is a stark contrast to her strict and traditional mother, Mrs. Kim, who has very conservative values rooted in her Korean heritage. This dynamic serves as a poignant exploration of the generation gap and cultural clash, offering viewers an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by immigrant families in adapting to a new culture while preserving their traditions. Lane's journey towards independence and self-discovery, often in defiance of her mother's expectations, is a central arc in the series. Their relationship is not only a source of humor and conflict but also a touching portrayal of the universal themes of identity, family bonds, and the balance between tradition and personal growth. In Gilmore Girls, Lane and Ms. Kim's relationship adds depth and authenticity to the storyline, making it an integral part of the show's enduring appeal.

5) Diverse cast

Stars Hollow may be one of the most vibrant small towns of all television. Living in a tiny village myself, I can say the atmosphere portrayed represents the reality of most of the close-knit communities out there. While I cannot speak for every small town in the world, I can still say that it is not uncommon to come across a series of individuals that are completely different from one another, and it gets you wondering how you all ended up in the same place at the same time. Gilmore Girls features a diverse and colourful cast, coming from different backgrounds and walking opposite life paths. It all contributes to the rich character tapestry we all know and love.

When mentioning the extravaganza of the individuals populating Stars Hollow, it would be impossible not to mention Kirk Gleason. He stands out as one of the most diverse and uniquely quirky figures in the show. His multifaceted oddness is immediately apparent, taking on a bewildering array of bizarre jobs in Stars Hollow and displaying a wide range of peculiar talents. One of his signature characteristics is his tendency to frequently changing his name, keeping both viewers and the townsfolk amused with monikers like Mick and Sean. Kirk's social awkwardness and obliviousness to his own eccentricities create countless humorous and unique interactions with other characters, and his ubiquitous presence in town events adds continuity and charm. Yet, beneath his odd exterior, Kirk has moments of vulnerability that reveal a more relatable and human side, making him a well-rounded and endearing part of the show's diverse ensemble of characters.

6) Realistic flaws

The reason why these characters work so well is that they’re not perfect human beings. They are flawed, just like anybody else. They have weaknesses, bad habits, a short temper or an unpleasant attitude. Everything that every person in the world has to deal with. This is the step that transforms those characters in well-rounded individuals. They make mistakes, they are human and sometimes they have a hard time accepting that. This is probably the most relatable component of all, making them memorable and allowing viewers to feel closer to them.

Many people may not agree with the example I am going to offer you, but I believe the most fitting character to illustrate my point is Rory Gilmore. She is either loved or hated, no in-between. That is because she is extremely talented and thoughtful but her choices are often not ideal, to say the least. For starters, her ambiguity is a key element that makes her relatable. She is intelligent and ambitious, yet she makes mistakes and faces challenges like any real person. Her relationships with her mother, grandparents, and romantic partners are marked by ups and downs, mirroring the complexities of real-life relationships. Despite her intelligence, she grapples with academic and career setbacks, showcasing that even the brightest individuals encounter hurdles, although she sometimes falls into the trap of the ‘gifted kid syndrome’. Rory's character is not immune to moral dilemmas and questionable choices, such as her affair with a married man, emphasizing that she is not free from ethically complicated decisions. Throughout the series, she undergoes growth and learning, illustrating her humanity and capacity for self-improvement. Rory's insecurities, self-doubt, identity crises, and struggles to find her place in the world are exactly like the common challenges people face in their formative years, though she is often unaware of her privilege throughout it, making her seem shallow and entitled. These multifaceted characteristics collectively make Rory a realistically flawed character, resonating with viewers who appreciate her authenticity, or absolutely bash her for her attitude.

7) Character consistency

While in Gilmore Girls we are almost never dealing with archetypes and static characters, one thing is for certain: their changes are reasonable and consistent with their core values. The growth of characters should never come out of nowhere, as a divine illumination or a miracle. It needs to be thoroughly flashed out, still maintaining the essence of the character we’re dealing with. It is not an easy task to achieve, though. This show balances perfectly character growth without altering their essential traits. This helps the audience connect with them and understand their way of thinking without always having to be explicit about it.

An immediate example that comes to mind is certainly Luke Danes. His unwavering consistency in Gilmore Girls is a testament to his enduring appeal as a character. Throughout the series, he maintains a steady personality, characterised by his no-nonsense attitude and gruff demeanour, making him a reassuring presence in the lives of the main characters. His strong moral code and commitment to honesty and integrity are a defining feature, underscoring his reliability and sense of duty. What sets Luke apart is his steadfastness in both his personal and professional life, with his ever-present diner serving as a symbol of his resistance to change and his deep connection to the town of Stars Hollow. While other characters in the show undergo significant personal growth and transformation, Luke remains largely unchanged, contributing to his status as the anchor and the most consistent character in the series.

8) Casting and acting

This goes without saying, but I believe it is a point worth mentioning. It doesn’t directly concern the creation of characters and the writing process of a well-rounded individual per se, but it is a passage that is just as essential as any other. The casting choices can truly mould a character and change their very essence. This show did an excellent job at picking the perfect actors for the role they were given. Even the less influential characters story-wise are just as convincing as the others thanks to the professional performers that embodied them. The strength of a performance plays a pivotal role in the path of bringing a character to life.

The cases in point I could choose are countless, but one actress truly stands out to me. I am talking about Liza Weil. As Paris Geller, she masterfully portrays a complex character with unwavering precision. Paris is a high-achieving, driven, and often neurotic personality, and Weil brings her to life with a blend of humor, vulnerability, and intensity. Her impeccable comedic timing and ability to deliver rapid-fire dialogue make Paris one of the show's standout characters, consistently providing witty and memorable moments. Weil's portrayal of Paris also delves into the character's emotional depth and insecurities, giving her a multifaceted and relatable quality that resonates with the audience. Her ability to seamlessly transition between humor and heart makes Liza Weil's performance a standout, adding depth and nuance to the show and making Paris Geller one of the most beloved and memorable characters in Gilmore Girls.

While I am aware that some characters on the show are not exactly well-flashed-out and they can be kind of one-dimensional and stereotyped, I reckon the combination of excellent writing, character development and talented actors all contribute to the unending fame of the series. Each character, be it from New Haven, Stars Hollow or anywhere else, has a special place in the hearts of viewers. That only goes to show how powerful and long-lasting the heritage of Gilmore Girls is.
